After more than thirty years living and working in Balnakeil, I'm still proud to call the Craft Village my home. Some old friends and neighbours have gone, and new ones have moved in, bringing new energy and ideas. Durness and Balnakeil continue to inspire me in my work.

A little bit of comfort, cosiness and luxury. Cambria sleeps 4 people (a double and a bunk bed) and has a patio, small garden and sauna.
Paul and James founded Cocoa Mountain in June 2006 with the simple aim to produce the most delicious, fresh, and innovative chocolates on the planet.
We are probably the most geographically remote chocolate producer in Europe, and feel that the beauty of our surroundings should be reflected in the quality of our products.
We are fortunate to be able to produce a fantastic product that makes people smile and be happy - and as a small but growing team, we all take satisfaction and enjoyment from our daily work!
Cast Off Crafts
Facebook: Cast Off Crafts
Cast Off Crafts – as its name suggests – uses found, gifted or re-discovered materials such as driftwood, shells, and sea-glass, and re-works them into embroideries, fibres, and paper to create multi-media pieces that are both useful and decorative.
The shop also offers work by other artists with provenance to the area who create high-quality silver jewellery, paintings, and cards.
Cast Off Crafts has a growing reputation as a friendly and welcoming space with an eclectic range of items across a wide price range. It is run by the owner (and her increasingly famous dog!)

PLASTIC LAB, researches ways to recycle fishing ropes, nets and hard
plastic collected from Balnakeil Beach. Fishing nets (polypropylene) is
hard and makes good construction material, while fishing ropes (mostly
nylon) comes in many colours and is translucent, making it ideal for
more aesthetically pleasing products such as lampshades, and decorative
bowls. We also sell plastic alternatives such as, wooden toothbrushes,
shampoo bars. Come and have a chat about ways to control plastic
pollution in our oceans and becoming plastic free.
PLASTIC LAB is managed by Plastic@Bay, a non-profit organisation
dedicated to removing plastic pollution from our beaches, researching
innovative ways to recycle and reuse marine plastic, and outreach about
the pervasive, long lasting effects of the pollution from and with
plastics. Check out our website www.plasticatbay.org

‘Durness Deep Time´ is an exciting exhibition designed by geologist Dr. Björn S, Hardarson featuring the geology and archaeology of the Durness area. Björn shares his knowledge of the local landscape during a range of walks which are tailored to all ages and prior levels of knowledge.
The walks are designed to complement the exhibition and delve deeper into the geology of this fascinating part of the world where tremendous forces of colliding continents created the magnificent landscape of the Durness area.
Being located on an ancient sea-bed, the fertile Durness limestone has attracted people since Mesolithic times. Archaeological evidence is found at several locations and are included in the walks.
Open April-October 10 am – 6 pm
